Spring Home “Cleaning”?

April 12, 2010

  • Reduce clutter and de-personalize
  • Focus on the positive selling features of each room
  • Create a focal point in the living, dining and family rooms
  • Create a serene atmosphere in bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Neutralize the décor to appeal to more buyers
  • Edit and remove unnecessary furniture and accessories
  • Remove fridge magnets
  • Maximize counter space in kitchens
  • Free up storage space in cupboards and closets
  • Eliminate visual distractions
  • Make the rooms appear bright, warm and inviting
  • Be aware of and eliminate pet and cooking odours
  • Create curb appeal quickly with potted plants and flowers

Obviously this well thought out & succinct list from Trading Places is about home STAGING. As in “Let’s make our house look its absolute bestest so it well sell the fastest!” Amazing tips. However, I’ve just realized that these are great home CLEANING tips too.

The only thing that I would remove from the list is “de-personalize” since, well, I’m planning to stay. But really, everything else on the list sounds like it will help me achieve the kind of place I’d want to call home and actually live in.

Seriously just look at the first one: Reduce Clutter? You don’t even know what kinds of “collections” we have around here. Between stacks of random papers and Mr. Light’s electrical cord stash for every tech device known to mankind  – we need to stop drowning in the “stuff”. The whole list is great… I’m going to have to print this out and attack one room at a time!

But I digress. Truthfully – I wish I had a magic wand like Mickey in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. When I wake up tomorrow morning… perfectly lovely well-arranged apartment! Wouldn’t that be bliss?!

How about you? Got any major spring cleaning plans? Or have you already conquered your clutter?
